Events and Activities

Our events are designed to provide practical and relevant information and ideas that clarify the challenges and opportunities and offer the methodology, innovation and resources that make sense of the new development environment.

All activites are carefully curated to ensure that the right people are in the room. We are happy to have a small number of interested and committed people, willing to participate and contribute, rather than a room full of people primarily there for the beer! We are a network of thinkers first, drinkers second!

Attendance is generally free - however, numbers will be limited and registered Members will have first call.

ReThinkingBuilding is currently free to join and Members will benefit from listing on our Like Minds directory.

Rethinking Refurbishment

Hosted by:

Event Overview

As the construction industry seeks to reduce embodied carbon and support a more sustainable built environment, refurbishment and adaptive re-use are increasingly being prioritised over demolition and new-build solutions. While retaining and repurposing existing buildings can deliver significant environmental benefits, it also introduces a range of complex fire safety challenges that must be carefully considered. This CPD session will explore how project teams can balance sustainability objectives with fire safety requirements, examining the key risks, design considerations, and practical lessons learned when upgrading and reusing existing assets.

Joule Group Hosted CPD

A technical presentation exploring the fire safety challenges associated with refurbishment projects, including the high-level considerations that fire engineers, design teams, consultants, and project stakeholders encounter when reusing existing buildings and infrastructure.

Panel Discussion
Hosted by Joule Group, featuring industry experts/RTB members sharing practical insights and project experience:

  • RYBKA – Considerations when reusing existing fire safety systems, including sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke control systems, and HVAC integration.

  • Currie & Brown – Challenges and insights from a project management perspective, including managing fire safety risks, navigating compliance requirements, and delivering successful refurbishment projects while supporting sustainability objectives.

  • Simple Works – Structural fire safety considerations in refurbishment projects, including load-bearing structures, structural fire assessments, and the surveys required to understand the condition and performance of existing buildings.

  • All Panellists – Real-world experiences, lessons learned, and key fire safety considerations when pursuing sustainable building re-use and refurbishment projects.

Networking & Drinks
An opportunity for attendees to continue discussions with speakers and industry peers in an informal networking environment on Joule’s roof terrace.
